We are pleased to announce our WhyWeHike: Raising Sarcoma Awareness One Step at a Time event, alongside WhyWeHike.org to benefit the Sarcoma Foundation of America, Inc.
The event presents itself as a way to bring greater awareness about Sarcoma, a cancer we know is often forgotten due to its rarity, while raising funds for research initiatives.
The Glass Jug will donate all proceeds from the sale of a selected The Glass Jug Beer Lab - Brewery draft beer during the event along with the proceeds of a special small batch beer brewed by Starpoint Brewing for the event.
A silent auction and raffle will be held throughout the course of the event, where patrons and supporters will bid on numerous items donated from across the Triangle. The money raised by auction and raffle sales will go directly to the Sarcoma Foundation of America in Why We Hike, Starpoint and The Glass Jug’s name.
El Jefecito Mexican Food Truck has also committed to attending and will provide a full dinner menu for guests of the event out back by the Glass Jug beer garden from 5-8pm
Sarcoma is a rare cancer in adults (1% of all adult cancers), but rather prevalent in children (about 20% of all childhood cancers). It is made up of many “subtypes” because it can arise from a variety of tissue structures (nerves, muscles, joints, bone, fat, blood vessels – collectively referred to as the body’s connective tissues”). Because these tissues are found everywhere on the body, Sarcomas can arise anywhere.
At any one time, about 50,000 patients and their families are struggling with sarcoma. Approximately 14,000 new cases are diagnosed each year and nearly 6,000 people die each year from sarcoma.
Sadly, about half of all sarcomas are totally resistant to any medical approach. However, researchers believe that with a concentrated effort, significant breakthroughs are within reach because of the unique genetic makeup of sarcoma. Indeed, sarcoma advances could provide a window for development of treatments in other, more genetically complex solid tumor cancers –like breast, colon, lung, prostate and melanoma cancers.
Since 2000, SFA has been the leading voice advocating on behalf of sarcoma patients. We are committed to raising money for research, advocating for new and novel therapies for sarcoma, and educating the patients and the public about sarcoma.
Born in the spring of 2019, Sergio Ramos created Why We Hike to educate the public about the severity and rareness of Sarcoma. In May, he and good friend, Eric Helms, will tackle the entire 30+ miles of the Art Loeb Trail in western NC in ONE DAY! This attempt not only is a personal goal set forth by Sergio, but also serves as a way to honor his late father-in-law, Don Zihlman, who passed away from sarcoma in June 2009.
